Remembrances Collection

We're not in the candle business. We're in the remembrance business. Each candle in this collection is inspired by a cocktail, and the candle jars were specifically chosen: a tumbler design with a heavy bottom. When the candle is done burning, clean the jar and reuse it as a tumbler for one of the suggested cocktails.

You’ve got to burn to shine

Formed in 2020, Lafayette Square Public House set out to make something more than candles: remembrances. Specific scents give you a shot of Christmas in April or a sun-drenched beach in February. Our signature Remembrance line is based on cocktails, each striving to conjure a comparable sensation specific to your experience. Each candle comes in a high-quality glass tumbler. Burn the candle and clean the tumbler to enjoy one of the recommended cocktail inspirations.

Hand-poured in small batches using 464 soy wax and cotton wicks, giving an even burn time of approximately 35* hours.

Humble History

can-dle (n) [ kan-dl ]

The word candle comes from Middle English candel, from Old English and from Anglo-Norman candele, both from Latin candēla, from candēre, to shine.

Candle making was developed independently in many places throughout history.

Candles were made by the Romans beginning about 500 BCE. These were true dipped candles and made from tallow. Evidence for candles made from whale fat in China dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE). In India, wax from boiling cinnamon was used for temple candles.

In parts of Europe, the Middle-East and Africa, where lamp oil made from olives was readily available, candle making remained unknown until the early middle-ages. Candles were primarily made from tallow and beeswax in ancient times, but have been made from spermaceti, purified animal fats (stearin) and paraffin wax in recent centuries.
